[cobirds] Bent County landbirds 5/7/12

Birders,

I sandwiched some brief land bird stops between my work sites today.
Nothing quite earth-moving, but I am sure some people will find useful
information or food for thought.

Van's Grove: One molting male Summer Tanager. Some of you may know that
I do quite a bit of Atlas work for the COBBA II. Last Saturday, I had
territorial Summer Tanagers along the Purgatoire River upstream from the
Roarke Ranch in eastern Las Animas County. Who knows how many nest along
this river course? I think it is possible that at least a few of the
Summer Tanagers seen in SE Colorado as migrants may be nesting locally.
I will go out on a limb and speculate that if Lucy's Warblers are ever
found nesting in SE Colorado, it will be along the remote reaches of the
Purgatoire River between Trinidad and Higbee. The recent records of
migrant Lucy's Warblers in SE Colorado might be indicative of possible
nesting in low-elevation cottonwoods along this river course.

Tempel Grove: One singing Northern Parula, one singing Northern
Waterthrush. Clearly, there was not a huge fallout at classic migrant
traps today.

"The Willows". I noted the migrant potential of this site on the south
side of John Martin Reservoir last winter when I was scouting for the
John Martin Reservoir Christmas Count. I had a bunch of great birds
there last November and December. This site is one mile east of Bent
County Road 14. 5 on FF.50. I visited once in April, and nearly got
carried away by mosquitos. Feeling masochistic, I visited between 4 and
5:15 this afternoon, and birding was great. Mosquitos were terrible, and
this may discourage some potential visitors. Uncommon birds were mixed
with the abundant Yellow-rumped Warblers. I had a male Tennessee Warbler
and female Northern Parula in the same tree. Wilson's Warblers and
Common Yellowthroats were also present, along with Black-headed
Grosbeaks, Lazuli Bunting, and Least Flycatcher. My cell phone rang as I
was keying in on a cuckoo, and it escaped specific identification.
Clearly, this is a very birdy spot, with rarities distinctly possible.
