Today, 26 May, Nick Moore, Andrew Core, and I birded around the NE corner of the state. Beecher Island, Yuma County, was lovely before the wind started, and we found a family of EASTERN PHOEBES, a MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 3 GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS
At Hasty Lake, Yuma, near Foster Campground we had a RED-EYED VIREO, a BALTIMORE ORIOLE, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, a CAROLINA WREN, and 2 EASTERN BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS (pair). Below the dam, there was some water, but few shorebirds: a couple Sanderlings and White-rumps.
At the HAXTUN STP, PHILLIPS, there were two locally uncommon Black Terns, an Eared Grebe, and a seemingly rare BREEDING Northern Pintail, with a nice family of tiny chicks in tow.
At Jumbo Res, the Snow and Ross's Geese were still present. I forgot to mention that I had 2 COMMON LOONS on Jumbo yesterday, one below each dam and 2 CATTLE EGRETS with the geese, which were still present today
At Red Lion SWA, just before US 138, there were 30+ White-rumped Sandpipers, a dozen or so Stilt Sandpipers, a Sanderling, and a DUNLIN.
Just to the west along US 138 we had a stunningly white KRIDER'S RED-TAILED HAWK (immature) and an Upland Sandpiper.
The wind sucked, or blew, your choice of verb, today after about 10:30 am, but the company was excellent, and in the end, we wound up with a tasty collection of birds.
The weekend's total for NE Colorado is 171 or thereabouts...
One final comment. Though rarities have been steady, and nesting birds (as at Tamarack) in good numbers, normal migrants have been exceptionally scarce. Very few migrant empids/pewees/warblers.
