[cobirds] SE Colorado 5/19 and 5/20 – Bent, Prowers, Baca, and Huerfano Counties

Hi all – my wife Kristin and I did a whirlwind tour of SE Colorado
this weekend. Below is a pretty complete list of what we saw – LOTS
of Western kingbirds, lark buntings, horned larks, and Mississippi
kites. Thanks to Dave and Diane (didn't get their last names) fresh
from the CFO convention who helped us w/flycatcher identification in
Cottonwood Canyon!

5/19
Bent County
Las Animas – Mississippi kite

Fort Lyons – Red-headed woodpecker, turkey vulture
Van's Grove – Blue grosbeak, Western meadowlark, Eastern and Western
kingbirds, red-winged blackbird, European Starling, common grackle,
Swainson's thrush, yellow warbler, yellow-rumped warbler, Bullock's
oriole, Northern harrier, Northern mockingbird, mourning dove,
Eurasian Collared dove, osprey

Tempel Grove – Western wood pewee, Say's phoebe, brown-headed cowbird,
house finch, house sparrow, kestrel, Canada geese, barn and tree
swallows, American robin, Swainson's thrush, magpie, horned lark

Prowers County
Lamar – great-horned owl, great blue heron

Lamar Community College – Hooded warbler, chimney swift, Eurasian
collared dove, mourning dove, European starling, American robin, tree
swallows, barn swallows, house wren, Western kingbird, red-winged
blackbird, wood duck, common grackle, Swainson's thrush, Mississippi
kite, turkey vulture, Wilson's warbler, yellow warbler, yellow-rumped
warbler, brown thrasher downy woodpecker, red-headed woodpecker, red-
bellied woodpecker, Northern cardinal, catbird, belted kingfisher,
killdeer, house finch, western meadowlark, Northern mockingbird,
Swainson's hawk

Baca County
Two Buttes – Lark bunting, Chihuahuan raven, horned lark, loggerhead
shrike, Western grebe, eared grebe, American coot, Wilson's phalarope,
American coot, Say's phoebe, spotted sandpiper, cliff swallow, Western
wood pewee, red-tailed hawk, American Kestrel

Pritchett – Great-tailed grackle

Carrizo Canyon – Northern flicker, Bullock's oriole, lark sparrow,
burrowing owls

Cottonwood Canyon – Greater roadrunner, brown-headed cowbird, prairie
falcon, blue grosbeak, Eastern phoebe, ash-throated flycatcher,
Cassin's kingbird, golden eagle, possible great-crested flycatcher

Huerfano County
Exit 42 – Rouse Rd and west – NO hepatic tanager! Violet-green
swallow, blue-gray gnatcatcher, Bullock's oriole
