Yard report – 938 Colard Lane, 4 miles Northwest of Lyons
Broad-tailed Hummers – one on 4/13, then not again for 9 days. Currently at least 5.
Common Raven – I think there is a pair nesting 500 yds north of me, one keeps coming over for water…VERY vocal
House Wrens – arrived 5-6 days ago, actively filling boxes with sticks
Lesser Goldfinch – only seen 1 male – arrived 4 days ago – expecting 15 more
American Goldfinch – at least 5 bright males.
Red Crossbill – 1 on feeder all the time, 2 more around.
Common Poorwill – arrived 3 days ago – last night evidently 1 got into some diet pills, and would not shut up.
Cassin’s Finch – 1 pair hanging around
Tree and Violet-green Swallows – arrived about 5/1 – checking out the boxes.
Pinyon Jays – I’ve been ‘good’ with the peanuts, so they’ve been around quite a bit.
Say’s Phoebe – calling a lot next door (but someone is putting grass in an eave ‘box’ (could be house finch)
Pine Siskin, Steller’s Jay, both Chickadees, WB and Pygmy nuthatches, Spotted Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, all present and obvious.
Magpies (who love the peanuts also), Rock Mourning and Eurasian Collared Doves, Starling, Hairy and Downy peckers, ditto.
Western and Mountain Bluebirds trying to defend boxes from the newly arrived swallows. Meadowlark in the distance.
No sign yet of Black-headed Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, Lark Sparrow, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee or nighthawks.
Have a ‘pair?” of Abert’s Squirrels around a lot…one the usual black, the other gray with a white belly.
Mother’s Day DFO/BBC trip to Lyons area.
