As a follow-up note to my posting yesterday re nests, today I atlased part of my S. Willow Creek block (Summit County) with Joe Scott & Sheila McCarthy. We did not get a lot of species but did have confirmations for 4 species with nesting cavities: Violet-green Swallow, House Wren, Northern Flicker (feeding a nestling) and Mountain Chickadee. Serendipitously we had a "double dip": an aspen with the V.-g. Swallow nest two feet above a House Wren nesting cavity! Among other species, we had an female American Three-toed Woodpecker.
Along the Blue River very near my place in Silverthorne, we had an American Dipper carrying food which we then watched bring to a nest and feed a nestling. Tragically, ~8' from the nest, was a dead AMDI hung up in monofilament fishing line. My sense is that this happened recently as there was no sign of decay yet as seen through binocs. I am guessing that it was one of the adults for the active nest. The good news is that the nestling(s) is being fed and should fledge successfully.
