Hi all,
Yesterday I went back to Walden Ponds and took some photos of the black goose there. It is not a goose but a duck. Still, big and black, what kind of duck is that? Having eliminated all wild species I knew this had to be a barnyard duck of some sort. There's a lot of varieties in the barnyard but this all black duck is probably a variety they call a 'Cayuga duck' which was first bred in the early 19th century in Scotland and the New York area. The 'Cayuga duck', then, is a Mallard, but one weighing about 7 lbs!
That was fun! Happy birding -- Dave Hyde/Lafayette, CO
