[cobirds] Pueblo and Otero Cos. (Neotropic Cormorant, etc) 7/1

Lisa Edwards and I did a little chase trip this morning.  We went to Pueblo Mountain Park in Beulah, Pueblo County, first, and found one Acorn Woodpecker and one singing male Grace's Warbler.

Then we headed back to Pueblo and headed east on Hwy 50 to Rocky Ford in Otero County, and on Hwy 266 we saw Mississippi Kite, Red-headed Woodpecker, close to Rocky Ford.  At Lake Cheraw, we saw the usual Snowy Plovers and Black-necked Stilt.  We didn't see the Reddish Egret here, though we were able to see the egret from Hwy 266, west of Hwy 109, by scoping the small lake that is visible along Hwy 266.  I don't think this lake or pond has a name, though it is south west of Lake Cheraw.

We then went to the east side of Lake Holbrook, also Otero County, there was tons of shore here, and lots of birds, including an immature Neotropic Cormorant sitting in the trees, right next to Double-crested Cormorants for direct comparison.  There were lots of American Avocets, American White Pelicans, and one migrant Greater Yellowlegs.  In the trees across the road on the south side of Lake Holbrook, there was a Common Nighthawk perched in a tree.  We stopped and listened for Dickcissels around the Rocky Ford to Cheraw area, and didn't find any.

Good birding,
