I got up way too early this morning and drove to Lake Cheraw to look for the Reddish Egret being reported on eBird and cobirds. When I first arrived, I stopped along Hwy 109 on the west side of the lake. I saw a lot of nice birds, including Snowy Plover and some Wilson's Phalaropes, but no egret.
Next I drove into town and scanned the lake from the end of 1st Street. Lots of shorebirds, but no egret.
I then had a choice to make. I wanted to go to Bent's Old Fort and I thought about my route. Finally, I decided to go back down Hwy 109. As I approached the middle of the lake I saw a truck parked with a scope sticking out of the window. I approached and introduced myself to Stan Oswald and asked if he had seen the egret. He pointed and said "Right there."
Sure enough, the bird had flown in. We got to see it for several minutes before it flew off to the west, probably to the small lake referenced in Brandon Percival's post yesterday.
I took a couple of digiscope pictures, but my technique leaves much to be desired, apparently.
Good birding, everyone.
