[cobirds] Red-throated Loon and Roadrunner at John Martin Res, Bent County

Hello, all.

First let me say the navigating the south side of John Martin Reservoir is not for the feint of heart. The roads are soft, unmarked, and confusing.

Having said that, Jeanne and I had a wonderful day there. We got to meet Polly and Paul Neldner from La Veta. We also got a new Colorado bird when a Greater Roadrunner crossed in front of our car - TWICE! We got to see Marbled Godwits, Common Nighthawks, Least Terns, and the previously reported Red-throated Loon seen by Duane Nelson on 7/3 and 7/7.

The whole area was alive with Kingbirds, Mockingbirds, Doves, Orioles, and Vultures. Other highlights for us included Mississippi Kites, Blue Grosbeaks, Lark Buntings (we love the state bird), and at the lake below the dam a Black-necked Stilt.

All in all a fund day.

Good birding!
