[cobirds] Three-toed Woodpeckers at Wolfcreek Pass

My family and I birded Wolfcreek Pass yesterday morning (Thursday, 7/5/12). Best birds were a family of American Three-toed Woodpeckers along the Continental Divide Trail just south of the road. We watched at length while the female foraged and fed a juvenile. A male and a 4th bird (presumed juvenile) were also in the vicinity.

Could anyone fill me in on the backstory behind all the dead trees at the pass? Bark beetles? Feel free to reply off line if this is old news to regular subscribers (we're from out of state).
