Birders,
While working today (July 3, 2012) on the south side of John Martin
Reservoir (Bent County), I found and photographed a first-summer
Red-throated Loon. It loafed about 15 feet offshore within a Piping
Plover / Least Tern nesting closure on the south side of the reservoir
about 1 1/2 mile west of the dam. If the loon stays in the same place,
it might be possible to either see it from the dam, or from the rocky
point east of the closure. I'm sure the birding public knows by now that
it is not OK to enter closed areas. If you look for this bird, please
respect all closure signs.
