Birders,
The first-summer Red-throated Loon I reported to cobirds on July 3rd on
at John Martin Reservoir (Bent County) was present in exactly the same
location on July 7th. It is on the south side of the reservoir, about
one to one and one-half miles west of the dam, just offshore of the
fifth point to the west of the dam. Perhaps to avoid the numerous boats
and jet-skis, the loon often takes refuge within the buoy zone set up to
protect nesting Piping Plovers and Least Terns. Today, it ranged just
offshore from the east end of the closure to the large sandy beach just
west of the closure.
Today, five local birders were able to see and photograph the loon.
Please respect closure boundaries if you try to see this bird.
