I have now found Black Phoebes in 6 locations from east of Florence to west of Canon City including public locations at Florence River Park and below the MacKenzie Ave bridge over the Arkansas. Two of them appear to have paired up with the pair on my friend's property appear to be checking out nesting locations (actually at the first location where this species nested here).
Saw my first Eastern Phoebe today at Florence River Park but it's head seemed unusually black so may be an offspring of Black X Eastern Phoebes. It had started raining so wouldn't you know I didn't have my camera with me and by the time I retrieve it I could not relocate the bird. There was also a Say's Phoebe at Florence River Park giving this location all three of the phoebes found in this area.
I saw my FOY Tree Swallows near Canon City this morning, a flock of about 40 that came in like gang busters feeding briskly on the mayfly hatch. Also saw a smaller number about 20 miles east along the Arkansas River.
I found about 30 American Avocets, all huddled together, at Brush Hollow Reservoir northeast of Canon City. This species is very uncommon here so though they overwinter further east in the lower Arkansas River valley this is a migrating flock.
I got some very nice close-up photos of a pair of Common Mergansers along the Arkansas River a few days ago and have uploaded photos of them to my Birds and Nature blog
