[cobirds] Boulder County, Apr. 15th (dark Broad-winged Hawk & seasonal stuff)

Hello, Birders.

Christian Nunes and I visited various places in Boulder County yesterday, Sunday, Apr. 15th. It was sunny and mild in the morning, then nasty mid-day, then with conditions ameliorating by mid-afternoon. Here's a quick summary:

Walden Ponds. Highlight was a calling, close-up, cooperative dark-morph Broad-winged Hawk. Also 1 or 2 Wood Duck pairs, 2 Solitary Sandpipers, 1 displaying Wilson's Snipe, many Tree Swallows, 1 American Dipper, many Myrtle and a few Audubon's and intergrade warblers, 1 Vesper Sparrow, 3 Great-tailed Grackles, and scattered Brown-headed Cowbirds.

Gunbarrel Greenway. 2 long-present White-winged Doves, 1 (just the 1!) male Bushtit, and a few more Yellow-rumped Warblers.

Boulder Reservoir. What happened?--After spring sunshine and no wind at Gunbarrel, it was windy and raw with freezing precip at Boulder Rez. Anyhow, 1 Eared Grebe, 17 huddled-up White-faced Ibises, 2 American Avocets (swimming way out in the deep water), 2 Greater Yellowlegs, 16 high-flying Franklin's Gulls, a few Myrtle Warblers, and 1 Great-tailed Grackle.

Lagerman Reservoir. Windy and nearly birdless.

Clover Basin Reservoir. Very windy, with 1 or 2 alternate-plumage Horned Grebes.

Pella Crossing. So windy we just moved on.

St. Vrain Crossing at 63rd Street. Much calmer, and suddenly sunny. 1 Lincoln's Sparrow.

Apple Valley Road. 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 8 White-throated Swfits, 1 Broad-tailed Hummingbird, 2 Western Scrub-Jays, a few Bushtits, 7 Violent-green Swallows, 27 Cheddar Waxwings, and 1 Lego.

Rabbit Mountain. 2 calling Rock Wrens.

McIntosh Reservoir. 1 Clark's Grebe.
