This evening was a very productive birding time for me. While I was watching a Black Phoebe on my friend's property near Canon City I spotted a Scaled Quail, a species I enjoy watching but I had not seen at this location for several years. Then I spotted my first of the year Yellow-rumped Warbler in bright fresh colors migrating up the Arkansas River.
Then I found a pair of Eastern Bluebirds feeding nestlings in a snag. I believe this is the first breeding record for Fremont County and the Colo Breeding Bird Atlas II website only 11 atlas blocks with confirmed nesting for this species. I got a few good photos in the diminishing daylight and have posted them on my Birds and Blooms blog.
While I was waiting for the bluebirds to return to the nest hole I heard an American Kestral calling loudly, repeatedly and excitedly. When I finally spotted the kestral it was engaged in mating with another kestral on top of an electric pole.
