Just after 7am this morning, I found a male HOODED WARBLER at the banding station at Chico Basin Ranch, El Paso County. I attempted to send text messages out, and couldn't. At 718am, I found another warbler, it was chipping and sounded like a Virginia's Warbler to me, then I saw the bird and quickly realized it was a LUCY'S WARBLER. I photographed it at this time, and was hoping Bill Maynard would show up soon, luckily he did. We were able to re-find the bird, and get more photos. The bird stayed very high, and was hard to find in the cottonwood leaves. Bill knows a couple of spots around the banding station, that he can sometimes get a photo call out, so he was able to call John Drummond, and others to get the word out. Later at the headquarters, I was able to use my wifi on my i-pod touch, to also report the Hooded Warbler. The Lucy's and the Hooded Warblers were still present as of 130pm, or even a little after that. These were the highlights at Chico Basin Ranch today, nothing out of the ordinatary on the Pueblo County side of the Ranch, though there were some shorebirds, that included Willet and Solitary Sandpiper.
Photos of the Lucy's Warbler can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/ Hopefully Bill has some better photos, I might have some others, though these were when I first found it, when it was at the lowest point in the trees.
