About 30 minutes ago, I was standing atop the dam at Stearns Lake, Boulder County, marveling at the surreal birdlessness of the place, when, all of a sudden, a beautiful Sage Sparrow hopped out along the trail and just walked around in front of me for about 2 minutes. It called quite a bit. The bird was atop the dam at the southeast corner of the lake; precise location was 39.946392 N, 105.103117 W.
Other birds for me today along the US-287 corridor in e. Boulder County:
Ish Reservoir. FOS Brown-headed Cowbird.
Jim Hamm Nature Study Area. FOS Yellow-headed Blackbird and 1 passing Tree Swallow.
Panama Reservoir. 30 Franklin's Gulls and 1 FOS Clark's Grebe in a flock of 96 Westerns. And another cowbird.
Little Gaynor Lake. 3 FOS Eared Grebes and Steve Jones' merry group of duck learners.
City of Lafayette Municipal Aquatic Purification Facility. A small flock of FOS Barn Swallows amid numerous Tree Swallows. Also 15 Horned Grebes and 1 Hooded Merganser. (What is it about this tiny body of water and Horned Grebes??)
Erie Reservoir. American Avocet and Greater Yellowlegs.
Greenlee "Reservoir." 2 Wood Ducks, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, and 1 Yellow-headed Blackbird. (Gone were yesterday's American Pipit and Black-crowned Night-Heron. Love the turnover at this site.)
