Arapahoe County:
--A Black-throated Sparrow was reported by Stratton on Lakeview St near Ketring Lake in Littleton on April 13.
Boulder County:
--A Sage Sparrow was reported by Floyd at the dam at Stearns Lake in Boulder County on April 7. The sparrow was seen again on April 8 by Gent.
--A singing Bewick's Wren was reported by Mlodinow at the far west end of Apple Valley Road in Lyons on April 12. Take the second (left) turn onto Apple Valley Road. The Bewick's Wren was re-found by Waltman on April 13.
--A Bewick's Wren interrupted the CFO Board Meeting at the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks at 66 S Cherryvale Rd on April 14.
--The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW continues at the Teller Farm North Parking Lot as reported by Tumasonis on April 15.
--A calling dark-morph Broad-winged Hawk was reported by Floyd at Walden Ponds on April 15.
Douglas/Jefferson County:
----An Eastern Phoebe was reported by Kibbe at "Phoebe Bridge" near the mouth of Plum Creek at Chatfield State Park on March 28. On March 29, Prickett reported a pair of Eastern Phoebes at Phoebe Bridge. On March 31, Bob Spencer reported seeing one Eastern Phoebe and later his son saw the pair of Eastern Phoebes at Phoebe Bridge. On April 7, Kingery reported two Eastern Phoebes at Kingfisher Bridge at Chatfield. On April 9, Kibbe reported both pairs of Eastern Phoebes at their respective bridges at Chatfield.
El Paso County:
--A Northern Parula was found by Petterson at Fountain Creek Regional Park on April 10.
Fremont County:
--At Holcim Wetlands on April 8, Mlodinow reported hearing a singing LEAST BITTERN.
--Black and Eastern Phoebes were reported by Mlodinow at Florence River Park on April 8.
Jefferson County:
--The GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW at Red Rocks Trading Post feeders continued to be seen through April 15, as reported by Henwood.
--A Slate-colored Fox Sparrow was reported by Henwood at Red Rocks Trading Post feeders on April 14. The Fox Sparrow was seen again by Pasquariello on April 15.
La Plata County;
--A GLOSSY IBIS was reported by Allerton at Pastorius Reservoir on April 15.
Larimer County:
--The TRUMPETER SWAN at Duck Lake was reported by Komar on April 8. Directions: Take Windsor Exit from I-25 (Exit 262), go west on CR 32 (Carpenter Road) 2 miles and pull over to view the lake on the left side. Beware of high-speed traffic.
--A Broad-winged Hawk was reported by Leatherman flying over Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins on April 11.
Mesa County:
--A singing BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW was reported by Arnold in Devils Kitchen in Colorado National Monument on April 9. Arnold refound the BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW on April 12 with possibly a second bird. On April 14, Dodson refound BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW and possibly a second bird.
Moffat County:
--A GLOSSY IBIS was reported by Dodson at a pond just east of Loudy-Simpson Park in Craig on April 15.
Montrose County:
--A Black Phoebe was reported by Horn along the San Miguel River between Uravan and the confluence of the Dolores River on April 15. On April 16, Dexter reported a dozen Black Phoebes along the San Miguel between Uravan and Nucla.
Montezuma County:
--A Greater Roadrunner was reported by Meyer in the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument which is west of Cortez on April 16. The bird was 3.57 miles in from the Sand Canyon Trailhead on Rock Creek.
Prowers County:
--An imm GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported by Ashby at Lamar Community College Woods on April 8.
Pueblo County:
--A breeding plumaged Red-necked Grebe was reported by Mlodinow at Pueblo Reservoir near the east end on April 8.
--On April 8, Mlodinow reported that the MEXICAN DUCK continues at Pueblo City Park.
--An ad LAUGHING GULL was reported by Percival flying over N Picnic Road at Pueblo Reservoir on April 14.
--A singing Black-throated Gray Warbler was reported by Percival at Osprey Picnic Area in Rock Canyon below Pueblo Reservoir Dam on April 16.
Teller County:
--About 25 Black Rosy-Finches, and 5-10 each of Gray-crowned and Brown-capped Rosy-Finches were reported by Bankert at a feeder on Lawrence Ave in Victor on April 12.
Weld County:
--A MEXICAN DUCK was reported by Mlodinow on a newly created pond in St Vrain St Park which is on the east side of CR 7 and north of CO 119 on April 12.
Yuma County:
--A REEVE (female RUFF) was reported by Ashby at Bonny Reservoir on April 8. It was seen from the dam with a flock
of shorebirds.
Upcoming DFO Field Trips:
The DFO field trip for Thursday April 19 will be to Heron Rookeries led by Mary Cay Burger (303-771-3431). Meet at 0900 at the Parker Water & Sanitation NORTH Water Reclamation Facility, 18100 E. Woodman Dr., Parker. This is on the NorthWest corner of C-470 and Parker Rd. Woodman Dr is the first stop light north of C470. We will observe a heron rookery along Cherry Creek. Then we will drive Parker Rd into Denver to see the Rookery in Denver City Park near the zoo. Compare and Contrast. Colonial nesters. Bring a scope if you have one. Bring lunch to eat in City Park. Half day trip until about 2pm.
The DFO field trip for Saturday, April 21 will be to the Pueblo Area led by Paul Slingsby (303-422-3728 or paslingsby AT comcast.net. Please register with the leader. Meet the leader at 0600 at the southeast corner of the Great Indoors parking lot. Will carpool from there. Great Indoors is just north of the Yosemite exit from C470. Or, from Denver by I-25 use exit 195, and go west on County Line Road to Yosemite. Take Yosemite south to The Great Indoors, which will be on the right (west). Will visit Pueblo City Park, Olive Marsh, Nature Center of Pueblo, Valco Ponds and Lake Pueblo SP as time permits. Migration should be well under way plus there may be owls or quail. Expect to walk 3 or more miles on easy trails. Telescope and 2-way radios will be useful. Bring a sack lunch. We will try to be back at The Great Indoors by about 6 pm.
The DFO field trip for Sunday, April 22 will be to Rocky Mountain Arsenal led by David Rhoades (303-424-8633). Will bird from 0800 - 1300, expecting to see grassland birds, ducks, raptors, possible early migrants, likely swallows and possible burrowing owls. Space is limited by the size of the passenger van that we will use. Meet at the parking lot of the Visitor Center. Call David to reserve a space and to get directions. Lunch option (BYO).
